Student Attrition Is Not a Motivation Problem. It’s a Competency Problem.

Most institutions invest heavily in student support systems while overlooking the academic skills gap driving early failure, disengagement, and lost retention revenue.

About the Author

Dr. Scott Massey, PhD, PA-C

Dr. Massey brings more than 30 years of experience in physician assistant education, including executive and leadership roles across four PA programs. A nationally recognized researcher, speaker, and author, Dr. Massey has delivered more than 75 presentations nationally and internationally and is widely published in areas related to higher education, assessment, and student success.

Through decades of work inside academic institutions, Dr. Massey identified a consistent gap in higher education: students are often taught what to study, but not how to learn effectively at the college level. That insight became the foundation for the Student Success Program for College Students — an evidence-based academic skills and learning strategy program designed to improve student performance, confidence, and retention outcomes.

Dr. Massey is especially recognized for his expertise in assessment, accreditation, and educational performance systems. His approach combines research-backed learning science with practical implementation strategies that help institutions strengthen student success initiatives in scalable, measurable ways. He believes institutional consulting is ultimately a form of coaching — empowering faculty, administrators, and students alike to achieve sustainable academic growth and long-term success.

The Student Success Program for College Students

Two levels of engagement. One integrated system.

The Student Success Program for College Students (SSP) is a structured, evidence-based academic study skills

program designed to be deployed across all cohort levels from freshman to graduate school. What distinguishes it

from orientation workshops and one-off academic support resources is both its depth and its architecture: the

program is built in two tiers, so educational institutions can meet students — and faculty — exactly where they are.

COACHING

Student Success Coaching

The Student Success Coaching Model saves considerable time for individual faculty members; it avoids duplicating academic mentoring and tutoring services. The accountability model is heavily steeped within the academic coach process, making this process highly successful. Because this process is focused on facilitating success, students are treated with dignity and respect.
