SCOTT'S THOUGHTS
The singular goal of the Student Success Coaching Model is a passing PANCE score. The steps we take to move students toward this goal begin before the first day of classes. We strive to improve student grades, performance, and test-taking skills throughout matriculation and the benefits reaped are exponential. Ultimately, the passing PANCE score is the prize. Potential students can check to see what percentage of your students pass the PANCE on their first try. The answer to that question can play a significant role in their decision to pursue an education with your PA program.
The idea that with the Student Success Coaching Model, we (and you!) level the playing field for students from diverse backgrounds and educational experiences to give them their best chances to succeed in a rewarding, beneficial career is a primary focus of our efforts.
Following the needs and progress of every student is key to the Student Success Coaching Model. It monitors all students of the cohort throughout matriculation, considering the following from the time of their enrollment in your PA program:
Admissions variables
Final course grades in academic predictor courses
Following successful course remediation
PACKRAT one performance
SUMM I performance
End of Rotation exam performance
PACKRAT two performance
Summative Two exam performance
As requested by the student and/or advisor
As required by the program committees
Substandard scores in any of the above areas can result in consultation, and if deemed necessary or useful, Academic Improvement Program enrollment for the student. The steps of the Success Program target these specific areas with phase-appropriate intermediation. We address struggles in the didactic year with strategies that improve study and academic skills that will bolster a student’s performance through the remainder of their matriculation. Likewise, we address struggles occurring closer to the time of PANCE—for example, if prep-test scores indicate a strong likelihood that the student will fail the PANCE—with intensive mentoring and PANCE-specific preparation.
The Student Success Coaching Model insists that students themselves play the leading role in their own remediation; it is far from coddling or hand-holding, as the lion’s share of improvement lies in the student’s control. The model requires students to fully participate when formally enrolled. Students required to participate in the SSP must adhere to all requirements and academic improvement plans outlined by the student success coach. Monitored performance ensures that the program works for those who put in the necessary efforts. Individual, independent success for every student – on the PANCE and beyond – is the goal.
CONCLUSION
In our blog series, we’ve been discussing the roles in the Student Success Coaching Model. To summarize, we have outlined the roles of the faculty/advisors, the Success Coaches, and the students themselves. The commitment of every party is important to the program’s success, and the more dedication each party shows, the more your Student Success program – and your PA program – will shine.
We hope you will join us once more in our next blog, as we continue to review and discuss prominent issues in PA education.
